Mar 3rd - Surfer’s Paradise (Gold Coast)

We caught a tram a few stops to the end of the G-link tram line to a place called Broadbeach. It was another surfers beach with a few shops. We did see this character though.

We used these G-Link trams a lot

We ate a healthy breakfast - by the way, according to the scales in the apartment, Mark is the same weight he left the UK with and Pam has lost a stone. It is all this heat and lack of appetite and walking plus we drink smoothies more than anything else.

We bought some more essentials from Woolworths - big bottles of water and a new type of “don’t bite me please” insect repellent roll on for Pam.

Then we went back to the apartment and grabbed our beach gear and went to our nearby beach which is about 5mins walk away. Again, it is set up for surfers not swimmers - I suppose the clue is in the name of the whole area plus even the tram has holes for surfboards. The sea is rough today and apparently too dangerous for surfing so all Mark managed was a paddle (warm water and not a fish in sight). Instead, we went back to our apartment complex and swam, relaxed and cooled down in the pool.

In the late afternoon we went back to the main area for some food (Italian) and also to witness the beach front markets. They were interesting but there was nothing that really grabbed us.

Meat pizza - we shared both meals. That’s how we roll.

What we did notice was that teenagers seem to be embracing the 80s mullet hairstyle and it still looks bad. Our personal highlight here was the indoor Holey Moley complex with bowling, dining, entertainment and, for us, 18 hole wacky golf course.

What were the designers on when they came up with this?

We wandered around town a bit more and then headed off on the tram to somewhere called main beach. This was a pretty area with more elegant dining options and not the loud, brash surfers paradise beach area.

We headed back and relaxed in the apartment. Surfers paradise would certainly appeal to many but it is not really for us. Good to see but our short stay was enough.
