Jan 4th - Pamela’s Birthday

The seas are rougher today and on Mark's scale they are now at a children's rollercoaster level. In fact Mark has taken sea sickness tablets but Pamela is made of sterner stuff and has just shrugged off the movement.

The day started with Mark decorating the room but it did not go to plan and was more fiddly than expected so Pam had to spend longer in the toilet getting dressed before she was allowed out 😆.

Then a nice continental room service breakfast was delivered (hot ones are a thing of the past on P&O it seems) followed by a lovely bunch of flowers and another little Pandora bag present containing a ship charm exclusive to Arcadia.

After breakfast Pamela was shown a video of family members wishing her a fantastic 50th birthday - thanks to everyone who contributed and well done to Hugo for putting it all together.

The rest of the day has been a fairly busy sea day. We explored the lower decks a bit and then went our separate ways: Pam went off to a craft session and started making bangles whilst Mark went to a lecture by guest speaker John Altman (aka Nasty Nick Cotton from Eastenders amongst other roles) - he is a much nicer person in real life obviously and it was good to hear about the other work he has done and his love for the late June Brown.

We regrouped for a light lunch (well Pam had soup, Pannini with chips and salad, treacle pud and custard so we will disagree on light compared to Mark's baguette, chips, slaw and ice cream). We had a wonderful table for 2 at the aft window of the ship with views of large waves crashing around and engine vibrations - again no effect on Pamela.

The afternoon was spent in the screening room (Arcadia's cinema) and its very comfortable leather recliner chairs which are just asking people to nod off in. Normally that is exactly what Mark does but this time he watched the whole of the latest Downton Abbey movie without closing any eyelids!

In the evening we booked a meal in the Ocean Grill speciality restaurant.

Then we shared a trio of desserts between us - no pic of that one - and then a birthday cake was delivered, which we didn't finish so was delivered back to our cabin to have with a cup of tea another time. There was a bit of a language issue on the cake order so it says darling not Pamela but it was still nice.

This evening's show was Eric and Ern - a tribute act to Morecombe and Wise. They were in in the Christmas Carole tv show shown on UK tv over Christmas and they really have perfected the speech and mannerisms perfectly - it brought back fond memories of our childhood with the family round the tv.

We finished the evening with a couple of quizzes. We had done a theme quiz this morning (turned out to be food and drink so we were rubbish and scored 9/20) but got 14/20 for general knowledge and then surprisingly won the Comedy Greats quiz with 16/20 - a nice way to end our day.
