Jan 24th - Sea Day

This is the 1st of 7 sea days to get to Hawaii. It was semi cloudy today with temperatures reaching 23c so a big drop in temperatures from recent days but way better than the weather back home.

Today is spa day. Pam went off at 9am to the spa whilst Mark attended a lecture (new speaker - Stephen Johnson) on the Spanish and how they conquered the Americas. Brutal times. Interesting  talk and entertaining but not a patch on the engaging Paul Sloane who is probably landing back in UK as we type. Pam here, at the spa I had a fire and ice pedicure. This involved soaking feet, a foot massage, tidying and painting of nails (purple of course) and then hot stones and cold gel with a ankle to knee massage. It works well for the circulation and my legs feel great.

We then met Pam’s friends, Janet and Sue, where we found out that when we had been taught Canasta, by Pam’s dad, something went awry and we have been playing it wrong for years. We played another game (Rummikub) for the first time instead and then all went our separate ways. Our way was off to the hydrotherapy pool and spa area as we had purchased a day pass. This is our spotlight ship area of the day so let us show you around.

Pam on a hot bed - it does what it says on the tin

An out of action steam room. The pics of the many functioning steam rooms were rubbish as they were all steamed up. Funny that.

Part of the main hydrotherapy pool area

The main pool

As you can see the place is empty and the pool is very still, that is because it was broken so we were not charged and aborted the area. We will try later on in the week - especially if it stays cloudy.

Talking of broken, the ship seems to have also sprung a few leaks - internal so don’t panic. There are the odd buckets dotted around collecting drips and part of the spa carpet was wet and one of the entrances to the theatre was completely sodden from what must have been a burst pipe nearby - was it caused by last night’s singer and the sound system? I’m joking. Honest.

Instead of lazing in the spa we lazed by the pool and then napped in our room. The passengers can now be placed into 3 groups: those that sun themselves and tan; those that sun and burn; those that hide from the sun. Mark is beginning to brown whilst Pam was burnt but is now peeling so we will see what occurs. Our quiz partner, Lesley is very brown whilst Mark jokes that her husband Chris won’t tan unless all quizzes are held in the sun.

We went for dinner in the buffet as it was an Italian menu and we were craving pasta. Pam had a starter, lasagne main & 2 desserts (Tiramisu and Apple crumble). Pam says Mark had 2 mains and Tiramisu but Mark maintains 1 was a starter or even had 2 starters - you can decide.

Plate1 - pretty light

Plate 2 - even lighter

A selection of desserts we could have had

Pam surprisingly turned this down

We both wished we had had seen this food station before we had eaten as it was much nicer

We then walked around the promenade deck as the sun set and our tummies expanded. Hopefully the walk helped with the latter. During the walk Mark saw a new guy that he reckoned could be a George Michael or Peter Andre tribute act. We then went to see the house band Pulse and tribute man walked on - yep, Mark was wrong again. He was very good and the band is much better with him in it and the rapport he has with the female vocalist was also very good.

We left for the theatre to see the onboard Headliners show “Magic Moments” which is the story of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. This was a truly amazing show with great sets and lighting plus a storyline with actual acting dialogue - very rare for these shows which tend be song and dance numbers throughout. I think this is the best ship show we have ever seen on P&O. Some people went to see it twice. We did the big pub quiz and lost because we didn’t know which cartoon character says “That’s all folks”. We said Bugs Bunny - how many of you thought that too?

Pam went off to bed whilst Mark had a hot chocolate with a chocolate chip cookie then a slice of pizza - maybe that was the starter? Something to ponder whilst you kick yourself for forgetting Porkie Pig like we did.

Clocks go back an hour tonight so we will be GMT-7 from tomorrow.
