Jan 20th - 2nd Sea Day Before Mexico

So let’s start with a confession. Even after the gala dinner yesterday we went up to the midnight buffet for hot chocolate but there were amazing butter biscuits and sausage rolls so we just couldn’t say no.

Today we continued up the Pacific Ocean, along the coastline, up to Mexico where we will stop tomorrow.  It was an eventful day and a Mexican theme day as the cover photo shows.

More of that later but let’s start with a cheat spotlight area. Today we are showing areas of the ship that are usually closed to us but were opened up two days ago when we went through the Panama Canal.

The forward areas on Decks 5 and six were opened up.

First of 2 doors you go thru to get onto restricted deck

Them thru here which normally firmly sealed with a heavy metal door

Then you are at the front of the ship on deck 5 or 6

Also, once there you can see the forward part of deck 4 which is a restricted area for crew only.

Finally, the doors to the forward mechanic area on promenade deck 3 were open though passengers were not allowed inside.

So our day started with a very light breakfast after our over indulgence yesterday. We made a few calls home and then joined a couple of Pam’s crafting friends for a game of cards called Canasta. After a lightish lunch (Mark had a cheeseburger and Pam a Roast Pork carvery - you judge for yourselves) we took in the open deck areas to see lots of lobster coloured Brits (including the Captain who was off duty and trying to be incognito but his pink back didn’t help that cause).

Pam here, I may not have had the lightest lunch but at least I know where my mouth is! Mark basically had most of the cheeseburger on his face with the actual patty at one stage shooting out the bun. What he also neglected to mention is that his light breakfast included a Costa Coffee Hot Chocolate and pain au chocolate which he took back to the room and promptly spilt a bit on his side of the bed.

Meanwhile, we tried the daily jukebox quiz but it is definitely getting harder as is trying to find shade. We left the sun and heat and took in a piano recital by a couple called Piano A Deux. They basically played the same piano together with humour thrown in. Pamela loved it. Mark stayed conscious though Pam disagreed on this fact.

We then split up and Mark tried his hand at bingo (lost) and Pam rested in the cabin during which time she managed to find a ring in the wardrobe - must have been lost by a previous passenger - hopefully it makes it way back to them. Mark then exercised the promenade deck for 2.5 miles. Whilst there he heard an almighty crack and after 10 seconds joined a small group witnesses a dolphin travelling off in the distance. Apparently the crack was the dolphin as it leapt clear out of the water and crashed back in. At least he saw it as it swam away. He did see many more flocks of birds (all different sizes) as they swooped beside the ship and dived into the sea for fish. Apparently, there had been rays, turtles and more dolphins viewed by various passengers throughout the day. Mark just accepted he has now seen dolphins twice and Pamela once.

The daily 6pm announcement by the Captain brought good news. The Norovirus levels are now low enough for self service to be reintroduced in the buffet area - no more queues for drinks!

It is a Mexico theme night so we went to the buffet for dinner. Pam is not a fan of spicy food so one bite of Mark’s beef taco (mild) and a sliver of his Chicken Quesadilla (fairly spicy) was enough to send her to the carvery for roast beef and Yorkshire pudding - that’s two roast dinners in one day! Mark’s highlight was the nachos. Any crisp like product is more than acceptable.

At 7:45 we headed up to the Crow’s nest bar which is on deck 10 and the front of ship. There we listened to Hanna Gerendas who is an amazing instrumental pianist and we basically played name that tune. We will definitely seek her out again. Both her and Busker Mike have been excellent and play around the ship all day.

The Mexican theme continued up in the open deck with a party. We popped in before splitting up again - Mark watching the Soul Sisters of Motown’s 2nd show and Pamela went off to do more quizzes. Then we fell tired into bed at 11:30.
