Jan 14th - Caribbean Sea Day

Mark started the day with a trip to the gym. On the way he came across people hoovering the lift areas and staircases. On the the way back he noticed that there was still the usual lumps of fluff in place so not a great job done there.

Meanwhile, the gym bike ride must have been successful as the scales showed a little decrease in weight. As long as the clothes keep fitting then things are all good. Mark then had a relaxing breakfast, without Pam but with a kindle, and returned to the room just after 8am as Pam was stirring and starting her day.

We both went to lectures but different ones as strangely they were on at the same time. Mark attended a talk on Ernest Hemingway in the theatre whilst Pamela was in the Globe with a talk about lateral thinking and memory - this Included tricks to remember names, lists and the first 12 elements on the periodic table. The speaker was called Paul Sloane.

We had lunch in the Belvedere buffet restaurant today and have decided that will be today’s spotlight area as we spend a lot of time in here!!!  We will split it into 2 parts to try and cover both the layout and food offerings.

Let’s start with the layout of the restaurant and a sample menu.

Lots of seats with nice sea views

Seats on both port and starboard side plus some in the middle. Always seats available if the they can manage to clear tables.

Menu from a day or two ago - today’s disappeared fast to be replaced by the American buffet dinner menu

And here was the lunch offering

Drinks area. Not currently self service due to Norovirus. Teas, coffees available plus water and juices at breakfast.

Prepared salads, other individual salad counter also available. Soup is tucked away behind salads - you might just make out the bowls!

Col meats, pate, cheeses and fish. Also not self service and no sushi on offer on this cruise.

Every lunch has a carvery option. Today was honey roast gammon. Also lots of breads, rolls etc… of which you can a few in this pic.

Main meal sides. Potatoes, parsnips, veg etc…

Main alternative to carvery - today was pork adobo with rice. Better view of sides

Final hot food choices - battered sea food, southern fried chicken, fajita's

Daily hot pudding.

Half of the dangerous cabinet! Syrup ponge cake, brownies and chocolate mousse plus fruit salad

The other half had jelly and a strawberry fool which was trife but not quite.

Pam had chicken and chips and chocolate mousse whilst Mark only had the chicken fajita's in tortillas but ruined it with both the chocolate mousse and the spotted dick with custard.

There is also a dietary requirements counter for those with certain restrictions and food intolerances.

We spent a couple of hours up on deck in the Aquarius bar where we could see Cuba in the distance as we tackled the jukebox quiz to a decent standard.

Pam relaxed reading and watching tv whilst Mark slept for 3 hrs - combination of the Gym and spotted dick took the blame. Dinner was back in the buffet restaurant with the American buffet and we didn’t go too mad. Pleasant surprise was that the cheesecake was biscuit based as these cruise ships have a habit of making them sponge based. Here are some more food pics and the special menu.

Prime rib beef which we skipped

Ribs, wings and chicken which we definitely sampled.

American sides plus salmon

Hot dessert with custard - we passed

Part 1 of the cold desserts - we might have partaken. We plead the 5th.

Part 2 - no comment

We attended the 8:30 theatre show which was classical pianist Adam Johnson. Now, those of you who know Mark know that classical music sends him to sleep and in fact he has never made it through Disney’s Fantasia after about 20 odd attempts.

Mark here. After, after a 3hr sleep I was confident that this time I could sit through a 50min classical show. I fell asleep at piece 3 with Pam nudging me and squeezing my hand to keep me awake so I was semi conscious throughout the rest of the show. The lady in front of us was fast asleep and the man behind was snoring so I felt like a success but Pamela did not see it that way. To cap it all the darn musician did an encore and chose a piece from Fantasia - I had no chance. Pamela here, I really enjoyed the show, it was a mixture of classical pieces, dance pieces (like an Argentine Tango) and a piece from the last night at the proms called the Hornblower. Never ever taking Mark again, so frustrating trying to listen to the music, the guy behind snoring and trying to keep Mark awake. Adam Johnson is an amazing pianist though.

We ended the night with a quiz and Mark popped back to the buffet for a hot chocolate.
