Apr 4th - Sea Day

We were absolutely shattered and aching so stayed in bed until 9.30.

In fact Mark stayed longer and Pam only surfaced to go to the next Dr Kate Schroeder talk, at 10am, on “cooking millions of years ago”. Kate explained how our skulls have developed over time due to the foods we ate. Also, how cannibalism was common, normally of foreigners to the land and not their own people, and how different parts of the world had different diets, millions of years ago. It was all down to resources with South Africa having more seeds, nuts and plants, whereas in Alaska and South America, people ate more meat and fish. She also explained how fruits were easily found (although they did not look or taste anything like they do today) but vegetables were cultivated over many thousands of years to be the veggies we now know (broccoli, kale, cauliflower and spinach are very distantly related).

Mark had a light breakfast and went and played silly bowling which is 10mins bowling but with foam balls and plastic pins. After round 1 he was near the top of the leaderboard but in round 2 you have to use your less dominant hand and then he plummeted like a stone.

We regrouped in the Carinthia Lounge and caught up with Andrew and Diane and chatted about our experiences in Durban. They were off to do the casino roulette table competition. We decided to have a go. You are given $100 of chips and 5 spins to see who makes the most money. You get 3 different attempts. The top 5 make the final.  3 out of 4 of us made it to the final at 2.15 (Mark did not so he went off to do the music quiz on his own and got 26 out of 40).

The final was close but we all lost. Diane was second and Pam was third Andrew fourth out of five.

Mark went back to the cabin for an afternoon nap and Pam went off to listen to the choir sing in the lobby. They were amazing. They sang popular songs like supertrouper and I’ll do anything (from Oliver).

After all that exertion watching the choir, Pam grabbed a coffee and scone from the buffet and went back to the room to the cabin to read. To be fair she missed breakfast so you have to get your 3 or 4 square meals a day in somewhere.

Today is gala evening but with no theme so Pam wore her new dress from Australia. However, she first popped to the ship’s shops as she realised she had no jewellery to go with her new dress.

Purple Pam

Once they were both ready they headed to dinner. They sat next to an English couple doing the whole cruise and an Australian couple from Brisbane. We did not get a lot of time to chat as they were just finishing their dinner when we arrived. We are flexible seating and being moved around a bit on deck 3 though we are encountering some interlopers in our restaurant who are 6pm set dining - there must be an overspill.

A few days ago we promised to explain how you can see out of all the windows of the restaurant even though it is in the middle of the ship. Outside the restaurant is a set of stairs.

These lead to the Art Gallery corridor.

The gallery runs between the two restaurants decks and is named deck 3 lower. As the restaurant is so tall there is another space to place a small floor in between the 2 decks and not spoil restaurant views. Clever eh, especially as the gallery also has windows too.

At the end of the gallery there are more stairs are you are at the rear of the Britannia restaurant.

We went back to our cabin to digest our food and for Pam to have herThen we headed back to Beyond Paradise TV show fix and Mark to keep an eye on the muted football on the stateroom TV, in the background (nothing happened there!)

We ended our night back with Andrew and Diane to do the late night quiz and viewing of photos taken over the last few days. The quiz was very hard and we only got 13 out of 20 and the winners got 15. The other news tonight is that Sir Bob Geldof boarded the ship yesterday in Durban. A strange day to board as we know he doesn’t like Mondays. Apparently he is on board as a normal guest but may be dragged into a couple of things.

Off to bed now as we have another early start tomorrow.
