Apr 1st - Sea Day 2

Wow, it is April. Month 4 of our long adventure.

both awoke around 8am and had breakfast in the Kings court buffet which was moorish as usual. We are trying to be restrained but we don’t think we are being that successful.

Then Pam went off to take some photos of the ship and do some blogging -  she sat in the grand lobby. It is only one of few places you can read, blog or just relax without a waiter asking if you want a drink. Meanwhile, Mark went to the Beatles Story talk with Dave Mallinder. He covered the childhood of the 4 lads from Liverpool and their time together all the way up to their breakup including video clips of songs etc… it was nothing new in information but still wonderful to hear.

We went back to our cabin to get into our smart attire for the Captains cocktail party. We were invited as well as all the gold and platinum and diamond members who got on from Singapore Sydney and Fremantle. Over 600 of us got on and there were a good few hundred in the room, many were on the whole cruise so the invite was confusing. We joined a queue to meet the captain, Andrew Hall, who is in a picture, on our mantelpiece at home, taken from our Queen Victoria trip 3 years ago. He hasn’t changed a bit. We have put on weight! They gave out flowers to the passengers that have travelled the highest amount of days at sea with Cunard. The winner was over 1000 days but that is easy to do if you history currently have done 14 world cruises.

Free drinks flowed but that was a bit wasted on us.

We chatted to a dancer and singer from the Royal Court Theatre company who said they were off to Azura next with some of the Headliners on Arcadia. Janet came to the party too. She was very happy that the captain had arranged this for her birthday. That made him laugh. She sat with two friends from the Arcadia Moira and Jo and then the 5 of us plus her friend Ann went to the Britannia Restaurant for a birthday lunch.

Some had the fish but Mark had a club sandwich and chips and Pam had shrimp and peanut noodles. Dessert for Pam was chocolate balls that were like thick truffles for Pam while Mark had ice cream.

All the different desserts at the lunch

We left Janet with her friends and headed back up to the Carinthia Lounge for the Wipeout quiz where we got 5 out of 12 and the wipeout question right giving us 1000 points but that was not enough to win. We were there as Pamela was adamant she wanted to do the photo scavenger  hunt. Mark thought this was pure madness but at least it was exercise and he duly followed Pam round the ship. You are given 10 obscure photos of places around the ship from different angles that you had to find before 24 hours are up. You have to take a picture with yourself by the object as proof. We managed 8 out of 10 before dinner though it took a good couple of hours to achieve.

Before dinner we managed to put on our remaining wash load - Mark likes achievable goals. We got ready for dinner and went to the photo gallery to pick up a photo that Pam had printed for Janet’s birthday and we delivered it to her at her dinner table.

We had this printed and framed

We will break here for our daily ship tour section. We have covered deck 2 from forward area to the restaurant so need to finish the same area for deck 3. We will do this today and tomorrow. Today we will cover the area above the Golden Lion which is the Champagne Bar (which seems to be always empty)

And this room flows into the Chart Room which is a room that we love.

Back to our day. For dinner tonight, we fancied the buffet so headed off there. Pam had a tuna steak and a pork steak plus sweet potato fries and roasted root vegetables. Mark had a roast turkey dinner plus some of Pam’s tuna.

After the meal, Pam joined 9 others, in Sir Samuel’s, for a intimate chat with Kate Schroeder about her life with reconstructions and her work as the Director of Surgery for the NHS. A very lovely,  kind and strong woman who very much enjoyed telling us a story about giving a talk to a counter terrorism team where 14 of the team walked out as the photos were so gruesome. She was told by her superiors to shock them to see what they were made of.

After the chat Pam joined Mark to watch Foggie Flax again. We had seen him on Arcadia 2 months ago. He was still as good as on the Arcadia. He did a few of the same jokes but this time focussed on impressions of singers such as Roy Orbison, John Denver and Bryan Adams and talk funny stories and great jokes. A very good show.

As this was the early show, the night was still young and we headed to the Carinthia Lounge to listen to the Ocean drive duo. They were fantastic as ever. We also met up with our quiz partners Diane and Andrew who helped us complete the scavenger hunt photos. Diane knows this ship inside out it seems. Then we were joined by Arthur (the friendly Rabbi) and, as a team of 5, we attempted a different version of the listergories quiz. This time the letter was given for each category and we had to answer 40 questions in 12 minutes. The categories were not Animals beginning with M;  Places beginning with B; Food and Drink beginning with H; People beginning with A;. We got 29 out of 40 and we won CONVINCINGLY!!!!!!

The bottle of wine prize was given to Arthur as none of the rest of us really drink or wanted it. Arthur asked if we were sure about him having the prize and Andrew explained that we were not really drinkers so asked if he could turned the wine into water. Quick as a flash the Rabbi said sure given a couple of nights and his body and the ship’s filtration system would do that for him.

Then we thought we would try ringing home. This did not go well as the internet connection is shocking. Maybe it will improve tomorrow. After trying many times we gave up and headed to G32 where DJ Lily was playing some tunes and then “Habit to” came on to rock us through to the next day. We gain another hour tonight so tried to stay awake a bit longer.
