Apr 19th - Santa Cruz, Tenerife

pameladawnferris

Today we are in Tenerife. We have been here before, via a cruise and in this same port. It was about 7 years and it looks in worse shape now. We remember using a hop on hop off bus (no longer exists here) and many sights are under wraps and seem to be under renovation.

Anyway, we are jumping ahead little. The ship docked at 8am and the announcement to say we could go ashore woke us up.

Always nice to wake up to a new port view

We went for a buffet breakfast and left the ship around 9:30. Cunard provided a shuttle bus to Plaza Espana which saved us a 15minute walk.

The same statue we saw last time we were here
A beautiful bridge that goes over a river no longer there

We had decided to go to the carnival museum which was a 20min walk away. Unfortunately, when we got there, we found it was closed. Mark had checked the website (in Spanish and English) and there was no mention of it being closed. Apparently, it was because the exhibition was being changed - at least that is what the 2 people on the desk said when we enquired. Mark asked when it would open again to be met with the reply “Maybe next month. Maybe later.” You gotta love the Spanish attitude. Anyway, we got a few sneaky pics.

A door was open so we took this snap and the next one

We walked up to a road called Rambla Santa Cruz where sat in an open air cafe with a Cappuccino and strawberry & banana smoothie and listened to a Spanish busker.

A lovely spot to rest and watch the world go by

We strolled down part of this road and then turned off back thru town to the shuttle bus. The weather was nice and we sat on benches and people watched, but, to be honest, we decided that we were now in the mindset that we were just looking forward to going home and being in Tenerife held no real excitement for us.

Along the road were places for the children to play and beautiful trees

We also came across this beautiful fountain( not working) made out of tiles

So we caught the shuttle bus back to ship and Pam went to a souvenir shop whilst Mark was engrossed with the ship taking on usual, and unusual, supplies.

Are we having mattress issues?
Quite unusual for bellboys to greet us. Is there someone famous boarding?

Another reason for getting back earlier is that Pam’s stomach was feeling delicate so she didn’t fancy lunch out plus there was a special Flamenco show onboard at 3pm - they were excellent. This show consisted of 2 female dancers and singer and a electric guitar player. They did a mixture of traditional songs with amazing, intricate and expressive dancing plus a few modern songs with a flamenco twist. A very colourful and exciting show.

We retired back to our cabin so Mark could have a nap and Pamela watched Black Panther: wakanda forever.

We showered and had dinner in the Kings Court buffet. We were hoping to witness a sailaway but unfortunately there was a delay in leaving due to someone falling ill and needing an ambulance. We eventually sailed away as we went to watch the comedian, and pianist, Kev Orkian.  He is a British and Armenian entertainer and he was hilarious. We both agreed that he was the best comedian we had seen over the past 4 months and would happily pay money to see him again. Unfortunately he has not got a second show - boo.

We had an hour or so to kill until our next planned event so we decided to go up to the Commodore club to hear a pianist called Campbell Simpson. We hadn’t seen him before and won’t again. He just chatted a lot to people near him and discussed what the pianist/comedian had done and tried to replicate it. We left feeling very disappointed. On most ships we love the Commodore club (or crows nest) but this one really has no soul or atmosphere.

Still, we had another silent disco to attend. News of its popularity has spread and it was almost as busy as before which was surprising as it was a port day. Neil, the entertainment manager,  was having so much fun (doing Mark’s request of The Timewarp”), that he nearly forgot his role as the theatre host at the end of the Kev’s second show and just made it there on time (he apparently appeared on stage with silent disco headphones round his neck).

Diane and Andrew joined us after the later show and we sang and danced till after midnight with the highlight being about 60 of us doing a conga line around G32 to the tune of “is this the way to Amarillo”. We ended our evening back in the buffet for a midnight snack as all that dancing had given us the munchies.
