4th Feb - Crossing the Equator

Awoke this morning with the ship rocking a bit but with heavy showers. As often happens, we went our separate ways. Mark tried to do a lap or two  of the sheltered promenade deck but the driving rain got him followed by being greeted by the Ukulele class practicing - it’s not their fault but this instrument is seriously beginning to grate and the rain is more preferable to them especially the warm version here.

Meanwhile Pamela went off to see guest speaker Linda Bradley who is an expert on fabric, design and clothing. Pam found it very informative and learned about how the history of the Hawaiian shirt came about and how fashion changed in Hawaii after the missionaries arrived. After which she joined fellow passengers in the library to tackle this….

As she is here, and it is on deck 3 along from the Ocean room the Library will be our spotlight area today. It has a decent selection of books and you see many passengers with books but it is a help yourself system as there is no librarian. We have a kindle so was not bothering with this room until Pam found the jigsaw. The jigsaw gets replaced with a new one once completed and as she is an addict she is now only allowed 30min maximum a day.

The afternoon was spent watching the crossing of the equator ceremony out on deck. We don’t actually cross the equator until the early hours of the morning but tradition states that you are meant to ask king Neptune for permission. There was a whole show about tasks set by king Neptune that the crew had to complete and ended with all the crew members that were crossing the equator for the 1st time having to kiss a fish before they were chucked in the pool. It was a marmite event which people loved or hated but we found it rather fun. We will also get a certificate confirming that we have crossed the equator which will be a nice keepsake. Here are some pics from the event.

The officer (Narrator) of the proceedings. This is the Head of HR and looks 20!
King Neptune. No idea who he is though.

The Captain with his back to us. Neptune and Aphrodite (Chris - lead singer from Pulse) & many headliner dancers as water nymphs.

First time crew crossers who ended up in the pool.

Afterwards we scoffed Twixs (we had missed lunch) and played Card and board games with Janet - a fellow passenger who will also be on the Queen Mary 2. As we missed lunch (except for already mentioned chocolate) we had an early dinner. The menus are on repeat now so we know what we like and don’t like. Pam had a lovely rainbow trout and prawns whilst Mark had his first steak and chips meal of the cruise. We are also becoming a bit repetitive now with our activities as after dinner we migrate to the Globe to listen to Pulse - tonight it was their Inferno show (burn baby burn) and then that was followed by an unsuccessful spinnaker quiz and then the 10:30 evening show - tonight it was Australian Sax supremo Nick Russoniello. Pam was desperate to hear one her favourite songs (Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street) but instead got the theme from Benny Hill and Just One Cornetto again. Mark jests - Nick also played Baker Street, Careless Whisper and other Sax songs very well. We are definitely finding our tastes in music are beginning to differ significantly as the cruise continues.
